QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know

New to jiu-jitsu, new to Southside, or just want to know how things work? Here are the answers to the questions we get asked most.

1

I’ve never trained jiu-jitsu before. Can I still join?

Absolutely. You don’t need any previous experience, and you don’t need to be fit before you start. Our Beginner Courses are designed to teach you the fundamentals and get you comfortable on the mats from day one.

2

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable training clothes are perfect to start with. A T-shirt or rash guard with shorts or leggings. Avoid anything with zips, buckles or anything that could catch during training. We have a fully stocked gear shop on site and gis you can rent for gi classes.

3

Do I need a gi?

Not for every class. Southside offers both gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu, so check the schedule before you arrive. If you’re joining a gi class and don’t have one yet, get in touch with us first. We offer gis to purchase and to rent.

4

What’s the difference between gi and no-gi?

Gi jiu-jitsu is trained in the traditional kimono (uniform) and allows you to use the fabric for grips and control. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, with a faster movement style and different gripping strategies. The fundamentals of jiu-jitsu apply to both. We encourage our members to train both.

5

Am I too unfit to start?

No. Getting fit is part of the process. You can train at your own pace while your fitness, mobility and confidence improve over time.

6

Will I have to spar on my first day?

You won’t be thrown into anything you’re not ready for. Coaches will introduce you to training progressively and ensure you understand how to train safely before increasing intensity.

7

Is jiu-jitsu safe for kids?

Our kids' programme is structured around age-appropriate training, movement, technique and controlled live practice. The focus is on building confidence, coordination, discipline and an understanding of how to train safely. It's not just safe, it's hugely beneficial.

8

Do you have classes for experienced grapplers?

Yes. Southside caters for everyone from beginners to experienced competitors, with intermediate and advanced training available for those looking to take their game further. Our Comp Class caters to those looking to hone their game plan and up their fitness for competition.

9

Can I train at Southside if I'm a member of another academy?

Yes, absolutely. Visiting grapplers and people from other academies are welcome. Just check the schedule and drop-in options before you come through. Wear whatever you want.

10

How often should I train?

There’s no magic number. If you’re starting out, two or three sessions a week is a solid rhythm. If you want to train more, compete or progress faster, there are enough classes throughout the week to build training around your goals.
